Game 103: 16:00, Los Alamitos, Sunday, August 26, Play-off 3-4 (BRONZE) CROATIA 12 SERBIA 8 Referees: Georgios STAVRIDIS (GRE), Filippo ROTUNNO (ITA) Quarters: 4-2, 3-2, 2-3, 3-1 Teams: CROATIA: Egon JURISIC, Luka LONCAR, Ivan DELAS (1), Domagoj CULE (2), Ivan BEBIC (1), Maro JOKOVIC (1), Boris POPOVIC, Igor RADMANOVIC, Sandro SUKNO (2), Petar MUSLIN (2), Ivan BULJUBASIC (1), Josip SUTALO, Mirko NIZIC. Head Coach: Emil NIKOLIC. SERBIA: Milos MARINKOVIC, Petar TOMASEVIC (1), Luka SAPONIC (2), Dusan MARKOVIC, Dorde BASIC, Ivan RACKOV (3), Boris VAPENSKI, Petar FILIPOVIC, Miroslav RANDIC (1), Marko PETKOVIC, Petar IVOSEVIC (1), Stefan MITROVIC, Stefan ZIVODINOVIC. Head Coach: Nenad VASILOVSKI. Shooting success: CRO 12/26; SRB 8/29 Extra Man: CRO 6/10; SRB 5/9 Pen: CRO 0/1 Goalkeeper saves: CRO 8; SRB 5 Match Report: Croatia gained its first bronze medal to go with a gold and two silvers whenleading all the way against outgoing champion Serbia. Croatia started the best possible way with four unanswered goals. Jokovic, Buljubasic and Bebic on extra while Sukno¹s goal was laser-like from the top. Bebic gained his by stealing the ball, immediately gaining an ejection on his defender and swam halfway up the pool to taunt Marinkovic and score two goals in 35 seconds by Serbia, playing without the services of banned head coach Emil Nikolic, struck back through Ivosevic on a cross pass on extra to the far post and Rackov on left-hand catch. Saponic continued the Serbian charge in the second period on extra to close to one but Cule responded from the top on extra. Rackov replied for 5-4, also on extra. Delas slapped in a loose ball off a rebound on extra and Cule loosed a shot from the top on action at 0:52 for the final scoring of the half and 7-4 to Croatia. Saponic scored from eight metres at the top of the third but Muslin muscled in his 27th goal of the tournament from two metres for 8-5. Sukno scored his second on extra for a three-goal lead again. Filipovic left the water, as he did in the second quarter, with a sore right shoulder. Serbia took a timeout on extra and Rackov converted his second on extra and third of the match for 9-7 at 0:45. Loncar and Jokovic, for his 20th goal of the week, took Croatia to a near-unassailable, four-goal lead at 5:54. A Croatian timeout soon after led to a blocked shot and Muslin gaining the ball at centre forward, turning and scoring for 12-7. Less than a minute later, Muslin¹s game was over when sent for misconduct for an apparent hit to an opponent¹s face. It didn¹t matter, there wasn¹t going to be extra time. He had a bronze medal. There was time but the Croatian defence was too good and the minutes ticked down. Croatia drew a penalty at 0:39 on Randic for his third. Cule took the penalty and hit the crossbar. Serbia called timeout but the instructions to the team were drowned out by the Croatian fans behind the team. The ploy worked and Tomasevic converted for 12-8 to close the match.
Flash Quotes:
Ratko Rudic: Head Coach Croatia Mens Senior National Team " Last night, we did not use the skills we have. We played our best game today. I am happy to see that the best Croatian players of tomorrow can step up and play the game like they did today."

Game 104: Los Alamitos, Sunday, August 26, Play-off 1-2 (GOLD) ITALY 6 HUNGARY 9 Referees: Steve ROTSART (USA), Alexander GALKIN (RUS) Quarters: 0-1, 2-2, 2-3, 1-3 Teams: ITALY: William WASHBURN, Niccolo PATRONE, Giacomo NINFA (1), Paride SACCOIA, Alex GIORGETTI, Edoardo CALIOGNA (1), Niccolo FIGARI (4), Marco FERRONE, Federico LA PENNA, Francesco LO CASCIO, Alessandro NORA, Gianmarco GUIDALDI, Dario GENNARO. Head Coach: Pietro IVALDI. HUNGARY: David BISZTRITSANYI, Endre BORSOS, Botand SZABO (1), Gabor PECZ, Zsolt LAZAR (1), Tamas SZIKLAI, Viktor VOROS, Attila KINCSES, Ferenc SALAMON (2), Denes VARGA (3), Balazs HARAI (1), Lonzo MARNITZ (1), Attila DECKER. Head Coach: Tibor KESZTHELYI. Shooting success: ITA 6/24; HUN 9/30 Extra Man: ITA 5/16 HUN 3/14 Pen: ITA 0/1 Goalkeeper saves: ITA 13; HUN 8 Match Report: It was Hungary who controlled the gold-medal final from start to finish. Itwas a heated exchange with Hungary losing four players and Italy three withthree going for misconduct. The opening quarter was a test of the goalkeepers and here it was Bisztritsanyi who came out on top with some spectacular saves. Washburn, at the other end, was also impressive. Only Varga could find a slot to post the ball. His long shot came off the right post at 5:08. The flurry of shots and saves had the sell-out crowd on the edge of their seats, if they had one. A goal came early in the second when Ninfa scored off the post on extra at 7:29. Varga lifted the crowd with his second goal and 28th for the tournament on a cross pass, which picked him out on the far post at two metres. A minute later Salamon was on the board for 3-1 with a bomb from the top. Both team utilised timeouts but neither succeeded with goals following the return. Figari blasted from the top at 1:17 to narrow the margin. Soon after, when Italy had two players excluded in succession, Figari intercepted the cross pass to deny Hungary another goal before halftime. There was plenty of action in the third with Varga scoring a third for 4-2 on extra. Figari responded, also on extra. Lazar drilled from the top for 5-3. Figari scored a disputed goal at 2:20 for 5-4 down. After this an Italian was struck in the face and did not take part in the game. The referee chose to ignore the injury. Washburn, the goalkeeper, came to his aid and threw the ball from the pool. The referee turned the ball over and Hungary¹s Guidaldi earned a misconduct foul. Szabo converted for 6-4 just nMarnitz used his considerable bulk to turn and score at two metres for 7-4 at 6:40 in the final period of the championship. The same could be said of fellow man mountain Harai when heavily guarded at two metres. At 8-4 and with 4:24 remaining, the championship was heading to Hungary. Figari thought not and scored his fourth for 8-5. Harai gained a misconduct and then gave up a penalty foul. Figari shot but Bisztritsanyi blocked. Ninfa gained a misconduct foul and Salamon converted extra for 9-5. With the Hungarians celebrating the Italians didn¹t finish and Caliogna sent in a long shot with four seconds left to close the championship.
Kemeny Ferenc--Hungary
"This game was very easy, yesterday and the day before was the championship, three goals is a big difference.""From start until the end of the game we have the advantage""This is the expectation in Hungary, this is our national sport like baseball in America."
What this win means... "It means that maybe one player off this team can go to the senior team."
Endre Borsos--Hungary
On winning, "It means my life, we train for this for the last 12 years.""It wasn't easy, it was a hard game, it was a war, we had to concentrate the entire time."
On the goal of winning, "Yes, but we didn't want to speak about the winning until we got to that game."
On playing in America "It was a great time, a great holiday, a vacation, it was a hard job though, I like America."
William Washburn -- Italy
On losing-- "It hurt a lot because I tried to win until the end. It makes me mad we could have done better in the first and second quarter."
"I think they are the better team, mostly in defense but we weren't intimidated at all."
To reach this game "I believe in this team, so it doesn't surprise me so much."
On when he knew they could play for gold "After the first match with Hungary I started to believe."

Shooting success: USA 4/22; AUS 14/29 Extra Man: USA 0/13; AUS 5/12 Pen: USA 1/1; AUS 1/1 Goalkeeper saves: USA 8; AUS 6 Match Report: Australia finished the tournament without being beaten in real play. The only loss was in a penalty shootout to Hungary in the quarterfinals. The Aussies put on a show and proved who was the best team outside Europe and advanced from seventh last time to fifth this time. Australia opened strongly with two goals in the first two minutes. A third was added by midway through the period before the USA woke up to the Australian counter. Australia went 4-0 up before USA struck back with two goals. Australia then raced away to 6-2 at halftime and 8-2 thanks to two O¹Halloran goals. Krumpholz sent one across the line for 8-3 but Australia, through two Lawrence goals, finished the period 10-3 ahead. Cotterill, in contention for the All Star team, hammered in the 11th to start the fourth but was fouled out soon after. Sagehorn then had a brain implosion with a major foul and then a deliberate kick to Cargill, giving up a penalty goal for O¹Halloran to convert. Harmer and Cargill completed the scoring. Davidson scored the USA¹s first goal in 11 minutes of play inside the last minute. Luck was not on the USA¹s side with many one-on-ones missed through poor handling. USA improved from 11th position in Mar del Plata.

Game 101: 13:00, Los Alamitos, Sunday, August 26, Play-off 7-8 SPAIN 12 GERMANY 4 Referees: Mark KOGANOV (AZE), Andrei BAJANARU (ROU) Quarters: 3-1, 2-0, 3-2, 4-1 Teams: SPAIN: Jose Carlos GIERSIG, Eduardo MINGUEZ (2), Francesc SANCHEZ (1), Eridu ALCALA, Oscar AGUILAR (3), Sergi TRILLES (1), Marc ROCA (1), Abraham ALCAIDE, Edgar ANGELATS, Gonzalo LOPEZ-ESCRIBANO (3), Blai MALLARACH, Fernando GUTIERREZ (1), Manuel LLOBREGAT. GERMANY: Matthias FOERSCH, Sascha KNOOP, Julian REAL (1), Julian FLECK, Till ROHE (1), Bartolomaeus LUCZAK, Tobias GIETZ, Tobias PREUSS, Holger DAMMBRUECK, Maximilian MUELLER, Paul SCHUELER (2), Marko STAMM, Tim HOEHNE. Head Coach: Peter ROEHLE. Shooting success: ESP 12/32; GER 12/30 Extra Man: ESP 4/7; GER 1/13 Pen: GER 1/1 Goalkeeper saves: ESP 10; GER 15 Match Report: Group winner Spain finished in seventh position after claiming the bronze two years ago. Spain ran rampant over Germany, leading 5-1 at halftime and climbing to a five-goal margin after three. Spain had the moves, the counter-attack and the healthier man-up advantage. Germany couldn¹t put away the extra-man shots, which proved critical. Only one from 13 attempts does not lead to a successful game. Goalkeeper Giersig stopped some excellent shots at times but missed some straight-forward ones. Perhaps the early flight home weighed on the Germans¹ minds more than trying to win against Spain. Germany finished eighth in 2003 but did not contest the Mar del Plata event.

It almost lost the game when after 4-0 up at quarter time, it managed to stave off the French attack 9-8. It was Miralis who went wild with three goals in the opening period. He gained his second penalty in the second and collected a third penalty goal in the fourth. The margin was trimmed to two in the second and maintained in the third. As the game heated, Greek coach Troulos gained a yellow card. He lost two of his players to major fouls, as did France¹s Britto. Mourikis scored on extra in the fourth for 8-5 and Greece looked safe but Marzouki and Bodegas, back from injury, scored to narrow the margin to one. Fountoulis gave up a penalty foul and Bodegas grabbed his third to equalise at 3:13. Greece gained an extra man and went to a timeout. The result was gaining a penalty shot 18 seconds into possession time. Tsakirakis converted at 1:06 and it proved the winner. France was 10th in Mar del Plata two years ago so maintained its ranking.

| Argentina fended off a late rally from Egypt to win 9-8 and earn 15th place at the 2007 FINA Men's Junior World Championships. Argentina appeared to be in control early on as they led 3-0 after the first quarter. In the second Egypt mounted a rally and the score was just a two goal lead for Argentina at the half at 6-4. In the third quarter Egypt made their move drawing to within a goal at 7-6 with just 2:19 remaining in the period. That would be the score headed to the fourth. In the final frame Argentina would go back up by three goals at 9-6 but Egypt would storm back to close again within one at 9-8. They would get no closer however as they could not muster another goal to tie in the final minute. Aman of Egypt was banished from the game after three ejections. |
